This Zelkova Chinensis tree, also known as the Chinese Elm, is with 30 cm in height a medium-sized Bonsai in our collection. It comes in a very beautiful 17 cm ceramic pot type “easy care” in white.

This species, which is the most common Bonsai of southern China, is especially popular among beginners due to its slow growth and tolerance with a highly predictable growth pattern, which makes it ideal for beginners who are given a lot of time and forgiveness to get used to the world of Bonsai. It is truly one of the most loved and least demanding trees.

It can be found throughout China and can grow up to 20 meters high in its native habitat. It loses its leaves in the coldest regions, and in the warmer regions it is a conifer with evergreen leaves. This means that this species could survive outdoors in Europe like a deciduous tree. The Chinese Elm has very small leaves, a beautiful and distinctive bark of dark gray to reddish brown that becomes cracked and corky when ripe. While the Chinese Elm loses its leaves with relative ease, the advantage is that it quickly produces new ones, even if it has run out of leaves completely.

Although generally tolerant, the Chinese Elm does not like drafts or temperature variations. Most Bonsai indoor tropical trees prefer temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. In summer, the Chinese Elms can be kept outdoors. However, you should remember to put the Bonsai inside the house when the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius.

Like most trees, the Chinese Elms needs a lot of light. Direct sunlight in the morning is excellent for almost all Bonsai due to its low intensity, so choose a spot that is the brightest during the day. But please remember that during the warm months, the direct sun of the afternoon that shines through a window can burn the delicate leaves.

The Chinese Elm prefers when its soil is slightly humid and that it dries a bit between waterings, which makes it a very practical option for the busy Bonsai parent. While in general the Chinese Elm requires less water during the winter months, in spring and summer you may need to water it every day, depending on the location and climate. But the earth must not dry completely for a long time.

But we are here to help you with precise and easy-to-follow instructions so that your experience as the owner of a beautiful Bonsai is as rewarding as possible.
